Music Mind and Movement is an association formed to build bridges between music, dance and psychology to enhance the quality and depth of music and dance teaching, learning and performing. We run courses, give lectures, lead workshops and offer private consultations to those seeking to refresh and enrich their skills and/or to solve problems.
The Breckland Society was set up in 2003 to encourage interest and research into the natural, built and social heritage of the East Anglian Brecks. We are a membership organisation working to help protect the area and offering a range of activities to those who wish to see its special qualities preserved and enhanced.
You can find the Church of St Mary on top of the hill in Houghton, on the outskirts of North Pickenham near Swaffham. Of the small hamlet once described as Houghton Town, only the church and Houghton Farm remain intact. The last two surviving cottages were demolished in 1994, the remainder of the village is visible only as bumps in the field just to the north of the church.
Built over the remains of a Roman building, the church has stood here for at least 1,000 years. Evidence of a Roman settlement is suggested by the use of Roman bricks in the structure, nearby remains of a villa and its close proximity to Peddars Way. It is of increasing interest due to the discovery of 11th Century murals, the oldest of their type known in Europe.
This site represents the continuing development of what may one day become a comprehensive catalogue. Vast quantities of Medieval Wall Painting have been lost forever, of course, but there is nevertheless more left on English church walls than is generally realised; paintings continue to be uncovered and more still are known to exist under layers of plaster. Some of these will come to light one day; in fact some are already doing so, as at Houghton-on-the-Hill, near Swaffham in
Norfolk, which is included in these pages.
